Wedlock: How Georgian Britain's Worst Husband Met His Match - Wendy Moore

While Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, welcomed her husband’s illegitimate offspring into the nursery, when she became pregnant by her lover she was forced to give birth abroad and have her daughter adopted. Lady Sarah Bunbury was notable for bucking the trend. Childless by her husband after many years, she became pregnant by her lover and in 1769 eloped with him rather than pass the child off as the legitimate heir, prompting Princess Amelia, George III’s aunt, to remark that the idea of not imposing an illegitimate son on a husband was ‘quite new’.

This is still a riveting read, btw.
