My Traitor's Heart: A South African Exile Returns to Face His Country, His Tribe, and His Conscience - Rian Malan

This is hard-going reading as Malan basically provides an overview of events of violence and hatred between different groups of people in South Africa through the ages (this was written in 1990), and it's pretty graphic.

However, his storytelling - tho mostly lacking a linear narrative - is gripping, and his analysis is quite thought-provoking.
