In the run up to my Vancouver adventure, I  read a number of travel guides to piece together a rough itinerary. Of the books I worked with, these two - the Lonely Planet guide by John Lee and the Insight guide - were the most helpful. Both are full of information and recommendations, which are given with a good balance of sincerity and humour. 

Both have excellent maps and pictures, and cover information about sights as well as contact details of local restaurants, museums, tour operators etc.
